“Gili” means “small island” and derived in the language of the Sasak. Lombok has more than 15 Gili (small islands). Gili Trawangan is one of the most popular island in this archipelago beside Raja Ampat, Nias for spectacular surfing, Alor for divine diving spot.
From the coast of the place Lembar are the south-western Gili, including Gili Gili Nanggu and Tang Kong. The people of Gili Trawangan is initially settled from Bugis clan fishermen, they stopover to the island for resting. But the island’s indigenious is sasak.  Gili Trawangan is the largest of three islets that make up the Gili Islands, Gili being Indonesian for small island. Located off the northwest coast of Lombok in the Flores Sea, Gili Trawangan, and its sister islands Gili Air and Gili Meno, are famous for their dazzling white sand beaches, and crystal clear blue water. First “discovered” some ten years ago by backpackers looking for a more unspoiled off-the-beaten-path experience, Gili Trawangan has since developed into a jewel of an island offering a gamut of comfortable tourist facilities without the commercial excesses of Bali, with the other two islands providing more of a Robinson Crusoe feel.

How to get there

From Lombok :
Arrived in Lombok International airport, take a taxi (make sure with argo/ taxi metre). Then drop to Bangsal seaport to cross to Gili Trawangan. The duration in between 2 hours to 3 hours. It depends on traffic jam and time to wait for another boat turn. If you arrived in Lombok International around 03:00PM we advise you to take a boat charter, cause the public boat in bangsal is closed already on 05:00PM.
So, the starting point will be at Teluk Nara for boat chartered.
From Bali :
By Speed boat : You will be picked up at the hotel by the speed boat company and it is free. (applied only for certain area for example : Sanur, Kuta, Nusa Dua or other)
Then drop you to Sanur or Padang Bay or Serangan. Then cross to Gili trawangan. It will take for 2 hours then you can take a horse cart to your hotel reserved.
The price for horse cart is around IDR. 75.000,- to 100.000,- (depend on time and season)

Gili Activities

The main activity on the islands is scuba diving and chilling out – the laid-back atmosphere of the island is a major part of the attraction. It has a 7 km (4,3 miles) circumference and no roads, just dirt tracks and sandy paths that crisscross the island. It takes 1 hour to walk around the island and 20 min to walk from far end to “town”. Island inhabitants number some 1200 people. Scuba diving and snorkeling are incredible here, but even if that isn’t your thing, a boat trip is an absolute must.
The waters around Gili Trawangan abound with a diverse marine life, including harmless sharks, rays, giant clams and turtles. Other activities include surfing off the eastern tip of the island, horseback riding, sea kayaking, and of course the island’s most popular pastime, sunbathing. No motorized vehicles

As the authorities have wisely banned motorized vehicles on Gili Trawangan, transport on the island is by bicycle or cidomo, a kind of local horse and cart. With no cars or motorbikes, there’s nothing to disturb the tranquility of the island making for an exceptionally relaxing stay at Hotel Villa Julius. The situation is well kept like that as the solutions so that the island can remain pollution-free and the horses enjoy a more comfortable existence. walking and horse carts are the main means of transport. Walk or use bicycles when you can, as the horse is not so taken care seem to labour under extreme conditions (little fresh water, not enough food, sand and salt).

The Gili locals are also incredibly friendly – by your third day, the women selling fruit on the beach will not only know your name, but whether you prefer mangos or coconuts.
